JOHN MOTSON & RICKY GEORGE

JOHN ‘MOTTY’ MOTSON HAS BEEN COMMENTING ON, AND WRITING ABOUT, FOOTBALL SINCE THE MID 60’s, BUT HIS CAREER REALLY TOOK OFF WHEN THE BBC HIRED HIM AS THEIR SPORTS PRESENTER FOR BBC RADIO 2 IN 1968

THREE YEARS LATER HE REPLACED KENNETH WOLTSENHOLME on ‘MATCH OF THE DAY’ AND HIS VERY FIRST COMMENTARY FOR THE PROGRAMME WAS THE FAMOUS 2-1 VICTORY BY NON-LEAGUE HEREFORD CITY AGAINST NEWCASTLE

RICKY GEORGE IS FAMOUS FOR SCORING THE WINNER IN THE MEMORABLE GIANT-KILLING GAME THAT DAY, AND THE TWO HAVE REMAINED FRIENDS EVER SINCE, BOTH ON AND OFF THE AFTER DINNER SPEAKER CIRCUIT

JOHN HAS COMMENTED ON ALL THE MAJOR TOURNAMENTS: WORLD CUPS, F.A. CUPS AND EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, AND WAS A REGULAR COMMENTaTOR ON RADIO 5 LIVE SINCE THE PROGRAMME’S INCEPTION
